Functionalization of Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes using Olive Oil for the Detection of Pathological Cases

The Director of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research Center in the University of Technology (Prof. Adaweya J. Haider) and Dr. Duha Sadi Ahmed gets patent from Central organization for Standardization and Quality Control (COSQC) entitled:

Functionalization of Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes using Olive Oil for the Detection of Pathological Cases

The aim of this patent is to find a way for the  desorption of bacteria on the surface of nanomaterials such as the CNTs (either SWCNTs or MWCNTs) that used in industrial and environmental such as in the detection of the contaminated water or in the detection of bacteria in the contaminated  water that caused diseases. In this case, the CNTs were used as a filter.

In this work, the MWCNTs were functionalized using olive oil. This method is considered as a new compared to the conventional chemical methods. Also, all the characterizations and analyses were carried out. In addition, the performance of MWCNTs was tested by using a bacteria with negative charging. Besides, its ability to detect, kill or reduce its ability to grow up was tested when it will use as the filters in the future.

Director of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research Center in the University of Technology gets patent

The director of the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Research Center in the University of Technology (Professor Dr.  Adawiya J. Haider) has got a patent from the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (COSQC). It is about the contribution of ultrasound and black oil in a new production of multi walled carbon nano tubes (MWCNTs). In this project, the samples were collected from the residue of black oil that used in power plants. Then, it was purified using a special laboratory system that developed by using a distillation column till it becomes thicker and solidified.  it was activated and burned at a temperature between 400 to 500 OC for two hours. Eventually, the MWCNTs was synthesized using a technique of ultrasound. The product was characterized using FESEM, TEM, AFM and XRD. The performance was carried out by test the product for the removal of the pollutants from the water such as benzene, xylene and sulfides by using the new system for balance.

Generally, the number of studies, research and patents in the production of MWCNTs was increased. However, the synthesized of MWCNTs has some challenging such as the production in high quantity and in low cost.  In addition, this patent is with the collaboration with Dr Ismail Khalil Ahmed Mashaal from the Faculty of Science at the University of Anbar.

The importance of this patent is in the contribution to the community service through the use of black oil residues form the power plants as a source of carbon and the technology of ultrasound in the production of MWCNTs.  Also, the removal of contaminants from aqueous solutions using MWCNTs. in addition, the optional use of the system rotate the fluid to make a balance between the liquid phase solid phase and the proposed method is low cost compared to the current conventional methods. Finally, it will find a solution to the problem of pollution resulting from the use of electric generators and waste recycling and utilize them in the production MWCNTs in high quantity.
