“NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF FLOW INDUCED VIBRATION ON BILEAFLET MECHANICAL HEART VAL

According the abstract is below :-

Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHV) are widely used to replace diseased native heart valves. However, BMHV may fail due to certain reasons such as platelet aggregation, and damaged blood cells which makes the valve malfunction. Past reports indicated that there are unknown reasons for BMHV failure. This research investigates one of the possible unknown reasons of valve failure, which is the effect of blood Flow Induced Vibrations (FIV) on BMHV performance and structure. This has not been investigated by previous researchers. As it is known that pulsed blood flows in the artery, which can cause vibrations known as Flow Induced Vibrations. To investigate this, a numerical simulation accompanied by experimental measurement, was conducted, for blood flow Reynolds number in laminar region, ranging from 114 to 1950, by using Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) technique. The numerical model was validated against experimental measurements. From the numerical simulation, it was found that the blood flow shear stress values at the valve surface structure reached high values that causes platelets aggregation and may cause damage to blood cells especially at the valve leaflet and valve pivot regions.
