The Department:

The Petroleum Technology Department was established in 2010. This establishment was based on the actual need of Iraq for the engineers specialized in the oil and gas industry because the oil industries represent an important support in Iraq's economy. The department currently has one specialized branch, the Petroleum Engineering Branch. The Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Technology/ Petroleum Engineering is awarded after completion of the requirements for obtaining the Bachelor degree, which includes the study for four years of studying through attending lectures and practical application in the laboratories , participation in the summer training programs, preparation of graduation projects and success in the various exams in addition to scientific visits. The number of hours approved for a bachelor's degree is 3030 hours during the four academic years and the number of units approved is 149 units.

Petroleum and Petrochemical Engineering:

Petroleum and Petrochemical Engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Exploration and Production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Exploration, by earth scientists, and petroleum engineering are the oil and gas industry's two main subsurface disciplines, which focus on maximizing economic recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Petroleum geology and geophysics focus on provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behavior of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure.
