Materials Engineering Dept. Discusses a Master Thesis

A master thesis has been discussed in Materials Engineering Dept. at U.O.T. entitled:

"Advanced Coating to Make Low Carbon Steel Suitable for Many Industrial Applications"

Student Ayaa N. Mohsen's thesis aimed to improve the corrosion resistance of low steel surface by using flame spraying technology to deposit a protective Ni-Cu (Monel) layer which is known for its excellent corrosion resistance in various hard environments. several variables were studied, such as spraying distance ((100, 125, 150 mm), the optimum conditions for coating were ( 125 mm second level spraying distance, 30 g third level powder feeding rate, N10 substrate surface roughness, 50 mm/min for carrier speed spray gun

The results of the scanning electron microscope analysis show that the microstructure of the coating layer is rich in Ni-Cu. It's been also showed the X-ray diffraction of the Cu and Ni-Cu phases. The erosion rate was measured using sodium chloride solution.

The results showed that the lowest rate of weight loss was (0.00166 mm/year).

The discussion committee consisted of :-

1-Prof. Dr. Rana Afeef Majeed/ Chairman

2- Asst. Prof. Dr.  Abdul Rahman N. Abed/ Member.

3- Asst. Prof. Dr. Hind Basil Ali/ Member.

4- Dr. Hussein M. Youssef/ Supervisor.

5- Lec. Dr. Sura Salem Ahmed/ Supervisor.

The scientific advisors were  both , Prof. Dr.  Abdel Rahim Kadhum Abed Ali/ University of Babylon and Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Hamed Rashid / University of Technology and Linguistically advised by Lec. Dr. Sundus Karim Jumaa.
