Materials Engineering Department Grant MSC

Materials engineering department at university of Technology granted MSC to the student Ali Faleh for his thesis "Role of Engineering Materials in Enhancement of Heat Exchanger Performance"

The researcher aimed in his thesis to enhance the role of heat exchanger by using engineering materials for coating a brass tube type (B-111) by using steam condensers for Italian units in the thermal cycle power plant and protecting them from corrosion, unwanted deposits and corrosion by erosion.

 

The materials used in coating the samples are epoxy with different weight ratios of dioxide titanium nanoparticles (1, 3, 5, and 7%) and epoxy with 1% of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. A heat transfer experiments using a home-made double tube heat exchanger system were done on five tubes which are uncoated tube and old in addition to three tubes coated with the same materials coating the samples and compared between them.

The researcher concluded that the highest corrosion resistance was by adding 7% of the dioxide titanium nanoparticles, the contact angle of the coated samples was the highest angle obtained from epoxy coating with the addition of 1% of the multi –walled carbon nanoparticles.

As for the study of the effect of coating on the heat performance of the exchanger, the experiments showed that the epoxy coated tube with the addition of 1% of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes had the least effect on the performance compared to the new uncoated tube.

 The discussion committee was chaired by Prof.Dr.Basma Abbas and the membership of Asst.Prof.Dr. Nahith Mahmood and Lect.Dr.Laith Wadah , Asst.Prof.Dr.Kadhim Motar and lect.Dr.Ayad Kadhim as supervisors, Asst.Prof.Dr.Amer Majeed from Al-Mustanseryaih University as a scientific reviewer and Asst.Prof.Dr.Sameer Ali as a linguistic reviewer.
