Assist Prof. Dr. Saad Mahmoud Ali, Head of Biomechanics Branch in Biomedical Eng. Dep. gained a patent about: (Design of a Low-Cost Respiratory Ventilator for the Breathing Failure Patients due to Coronavirus Pandemic- COVID-19)

The patent focused on designing two new, simple, low-weight and cost-effective models for a portable mechanical pneumatic respirator that operates with minimum oxygen consumption to help the increasing number of patients infected with the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial models are carried out with ANSYS 18.0, and it is valued the test results of the device by using expert systems software design 11.0. Both devices are designed to treat all cases of patients with difficulty breathing, mainly for patients infected with the Corona virus, and for all levels of disease severity, age, ability and efficiency of the patient's respiratory system, while ensuring the safety performance features of the device designed using airway pressure sensors, oxygen, an oxygen analyzer, and a number of adaptable alarm sensors. The device also contains a modification to enable the delivery of nitric oxide (NO) at a specific rate for the recommended treatment of patients with an epidemic of respiratory failure. The device is capable of treating patients of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. The device operates at a range of 10-40 breaths/min. And between 4.04 to 64.64 liters / minute for patients with severe breathing difficulty infected with coronaviruses or other respiratory diseases, and the designed ventilator can work to consume the amount of oxygen supplied for a long period of time using any concentration of oxygen in the oxygenated breathing gas (FIO2 ), at least 42% higher than similar previous designed or standard ventilators.
