The Department of Materials Engineering discusses a master’s thesis on the manufacture and diagnosis of composite coatings using the electrostatic spraying method.

The thesis of the student, Ghufran Dhafer Khaled, aimed to increase the resistance of the alloy against corrosion, and to improve the bonding of the bone to the implant by encouraging bone fusion while maintaining its good mechanical properties, by applying a modified coating layer of PMMA-based composites with two bioactive ceramics (hydroxyapatite and titanium carbide). as a reinforcing material using dry electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) under static conditions. The biological behavior of the coated samples was studied by checking the corrosion, antibacterial and wetting properties

The L316 stainless steel alloy has been widely used in orthopedic applications to fix and replace defective bone tissue in the human body. The results showed that homogeneous, uniform, crack-free coating layers were obtained as well as high wettability. In vivo tests proved that in SBF, the coating layers showed a great ability to form apatite crystals on their surfaces indicating good bone conductivity, anti-bacterial and anti-corrosion properties were also observed.
