Civil Eng. Dept.  Grants a Master Degree For M.Sc. Student/ Mays Eyad Jaafar.

Civil Eng. Dept.  at U.O.T. Granted  a master  degree to the student  (Mays Eyad Jaafar) for her entitled  research:-

“Enhancement of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Rejuvenated RAP Mixtures with Nanoclay Powder “

In general , The aim of the research is to improve the performance and properties of hot recycled asphalt mixtures that contain a number of percentages of reclaimed asphalt paving materials (RAP) using modified asphalt cement with different percentages of nanopowdered clay.

The results of the tests indicated that the recycled mixture modified with nano-clay was better than the recycled mixture without the secondary material in all tests, which means that an improvement was achieved in the mixture, and this achieves the main objective of this research, but the (original) reference mixture outperformed the RAP mixture in Some tests, it may be due to aging of the binder in RAP which can have a negative effect on some properties of the asphalt.

It was observed that the recycled asphalt mixtures with 5% MMT of secondary clay improved Marshall stability and reduced flow by 53.4% and 28.9%, respectively for 50% RAP, while the indirect tensile strength ITS and compressive strength decreased compared to the original mixture. For example, the decrease was 17.2% and 10.95% for assays respectively for 50%RAP of samples exposed to the conditions in the assay, however; then improve

The compressive strength compared to the original mixture e.g was 17.2% and 10.95% lower for the assays respectively for 50%RAP of the samples exposed to the assay conditions, however; Then the moisture resistance improved as indicated by the tensile strength ratio TSR and IRS residual strength index, as it increased by 16.13% and 0.42% in 50% RAP and 5% MMT, on the other hand, the tensile strength was significantly increased in the same mixture where it was 83.2.

The discussion committee consisted of:-

1-  Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abbass Al-Jumaily,/Head

2- Asst. Prof. Dr. Miami Mohammed Helal / Member.

3-  Lect. Dr. Ammar Abbas Mohammed / Member.

4- Prof. Dr. Hasan Hamodi Joni / supervisor.

5- Prof. Dr. Hussein Hamid Karim/ supervisor.
