 Department of Mechanical Engineering discusses a master's thesis in (Applied Mechanics) on the evaluation of mechanical properties of composite materials

A master's thesis was discussed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Technology and tagged

"Evaluation of the mechanical properties of hybrid composite sheets reinforced with glass-carbon fibers and nano-ceramic fillings"

The thesis of the student (Noor Munim Haider) aimed to study the mechanical properties of (tensile strength, shock resistance, hardness, fracture toughness and damping ratio) of the hybrid composite panels reinforced with different ratios of glass-carbon fiber sheets, nano-ceramic fillings and gel-coat and comparing them with the mechanical properties of a car bumper Sherry type.

The researcher concluded that adding fiber sheets to the base material increases the mechanical properties except for the damping ratio. The same behavior was observed when adding nano-ceramic fillings, while the material behaves in the opposite behavior when replacing a fiber sheet with a layer of gelcoat where the mechanical properties decrease except for the damping rate. She also concluded that the use of fibers Carbon gives higher mechanical properties than glass fibers, and the mechanical properties of the composites reinforced with nanoparticles of zirconium oxide are higher than that of the composites reinforced with nanoparticles of silicon oxide.

The researcher recommended that the composite consisting of unsaturated polyester material reinforced with 14% of carbon fiber sheets and added to them 2.5% of zirconium dioxide to be the best composite in terms of mechanical properties compared to the Chery bumper.
