Civil Engineering Department awards a master's degree in Ductility of normal and high strength concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber Reinforcement

The Civil Engineering Department  at the University of Technology awarded a master’s degree to student Aws Bahaa Naji for his thesis titled:

“Ductility of normal and high strength concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber Reinforcement”.

The aim of the research is to study the flexural behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiberglass rods, and the improvement that can be achieved when combining fiberglass rods with iron rods with hybrid type reinforcement. 12 concrete thresholds were tested, divided into three groups, with concrete compressive strengths equal to 40, 56, and 75 MP.

Experimental results showed multiple differences in the flexural properties of concrete beams based on the type and pattern of reinforcement used. Sills reinforced with fiberglass bars showed a decrease of more than 30% in cracking load, 45% in service load, and more than 70% decrease in ductility, while they witnessed an increase in elastic energy estimated at more than 200% compared to sills reinforced with iron.

The researcher reached several conclusions, including the possibility of using hybrid reinforcement to improve the properties of thresholds reinforced with fiberglass reinforcement, as well as improving the behavior of this type of thresholds by using high-resistance concrete.

The discussion committee consisted of:

Dr. Wamid Ghassan Abdel Hussein, Chairman and Prof. Dr. Nisreen Saleh Muhammad Nimr and Dr. Members of the Halil Sultan Medal

And Dr. Basman Riyad Muhammad and Dr. Raed Ibrahim Khalil supervisors.
